GTA 6 file size and preload: how much space to clear

Last verified 22 Oct 2026By HeistNotes Desk · Updated 22 Oct 2026

Rockstar hasn't announced how big GTA VI is. Any figure you've seen quoted so far is a guess or a leak, and we don't publish those. What we can do is tell you how much space your console actually has, help you clear enough of it before preload, and update the number the moment it's official. The Space Planner does the arithmetic for your exact console.

What's confirmed

  • Platforms: PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
  • Launch date: 19 November 2026.

What's expected, not confirmed

  • Preload. Our planner works to an expected preload opening of 12 November 2026, a week before launch, because that's the usual window for a release this size. It's labelled Expected until Rockstar or the stores confirm it.
  • File size. Unknown. The planner lets you set your own estimate and shows what's left either way. Rockstar's recent games were among the largest on consoles, so plan for a big install rather than a small one.

How much space your console really has

Consoles reserve a chunk of their drive for the system, so the box number is never what you get:

  • PS5 (original, 825 GB): about 667 GB usable
  • PS5 Slim (1 TB): about 848 GB usable
  • Xbox Series X (1 TB): about 802 GB usable
  • Xbox Series S (512 GB): about 364 GB usable

Those are the widely reported out-of-the-box figures. Series S owners in particular should plan ahead: one large game can take a sizeable share of what's available.

Clearing space without losing anything

  1. Check what's installed. PS5: Settings → Storage. Xbox: My games & apps → Manage.
  2. Delete games you've finished. Your saves stay in the cloud (PS Plus or Xbox network) and on the console, so reinstalling later picks up where you left off.
  3. Move, don't delete. On PS5 you can move games to an external USB drive or an installed M.2 SSD; on Xbox, to an external drive or a storage expansion card. Older games run fine from USB; current-generation games need to be on internal or expansion storage to play, but can sit on USB until you want them.
  4. Clear captures. Screenshots and video clips can quietly take tens of gigabytes.

Do this before preload opens, not on launch night.

Frequently asked

Do I need to preload to play at launch? No, but without it you'll be downloading the whole game while everyone else is playing. Pre-ordering is what enables preload.

Will the disc version still need a download? Disc games on both consoles typically install from the disc and then fetch a day-one update. Expect to need space for the full install either way.

What if the game is bigger than my free space? The Space Planner tells you exactly how much to clear once the official size is in; until then it works from your own estimate.
