GTA 6 Standard vs Ultimate Edition: which one to pre-order
Rockstar is selling GTA VI in two editions, Standard and Ultimate, and pre-orders are open on its official site for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Prices and the full list of Ultimate extras are the pieces we're still waiting to verify against the store listings, so this guide tells you what's known, what isn't, and how to decide anyway. The Edition Picker asks five questions and gives you a recommendation.
The two editions
Standard Edition
- The full game.
- Available digitally and, as far as retailer listings show, on disc. Our physical copy fact tracks this.
Ultimate Edition
- The full game plus additional content.
- Digital only, based on current store listings.
- Rockstar's official site lists what the extras are; we're confirming each item against the PlayStation and Xbox store pages before we print it here. Until then the Edition Picker shows the extras as to be verified.
What we don't know yet
- Prices. We hold off on numbers until they appear on the stores in your currency. Retail prices often differ by region and by retailer, and screenshots circulating before launch are frequently wrong.
- Pre-order bonuses. Rockstar's site mentions pre-order benefits. We list them only once the exact contents and cut-off date are verified.
How to choose
Ask yourself three things:
- Do you want a disc? If yes, that points to Standard: Ultimate is digital only.
- Do you want the extras on day one? Extras in Ultimate editions of Rockstar's past games have usually been bonus in-game content rather than anything that changes the story. If that doesn't matter to you, Standard is the same game.
- Will you play Online a lot? Historically Rockstar's bigger editions have leaned towards online bonuses. If you're mainly here for the story, Standard is the safer buy; if you expect to live in Online, wait for the verified Ultimate contents before deciding.
If you're unsure, pre-ordering Standard carries the least regret: you still get the game on launch day, and digital upgrades to a bigger edition are usually offered later.
Frequently asked
Can I upgrade from Standard to Ultimate later? Rockstar hasn't said. For previous games an upgrade path existed on the digital stores; we'll note it here when it's confirmed.
Is the Ultimate Edition worth it? Not answerable until the contents and price are verified. Check back, or let the Edition Picker tell you once the data is in.
Where should I buy? The Edition Picker lists the PlayStation Store, Xbox Store and retailers that stock each edition. Some retailer links are affiliate links; it never changes our recommendation (see our affiliate disclosure).
